One million people claim GOG’s FreedomToBuy games in protest of ongoing NSFW game censorship row

Over one million people have claimed their freebies in support of GOG’s FreedomToBuy.Games initiative. In a limited-time campaign, the company is offering 13 NSFW games for free in protest after digital platforms like Steam and itch.io acknowledged a tightening of the rules around their NSFW content due to pressure from payment processors.

On Friday, August 1, GOG issued a statement saying: “We believe that if a game is legal and responsibly made, players should be able to enjoy it today – and decades from now. It’s our statement: when games are delisted today because of discomfort, reviving them tomorrow becomes exponentially harder.”

As a consequence, and “thanks to the dedication of developers and publishers,” GOG launched FreedomToBuy.games to “raise awareness on censorship in gaming,” offering explicit NSFW titles like Postal 2, Agony, and House Party up for free.

“13 games are now available for free for 48 hours as a part of stand for creative freedom and preservation,” the company said.

“The response is so much beyond our expectations that our team needs to work around the clock to maintain the stability of the platform,” GOG said in an update earlier today.

“Any game that disappears today becomes exponentially harder to revive later.”
